Born and raised in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Marcus Jay King is a photographer-director and brand strategist whose work bridges the gap between creative vision and institutional goals, embraces creativity, technology, culture and future trends.

My work spans fashion, promotional images for reggae band Third World, executive portraiture, a wide range of consumer product goods, luxury real estate, colleges, universities and live events — always shaped by a visual signature built on intentional shadow and light that brings drama, authenticity, and a natural humanity to every frame.

With over 10 years in photography and seven more in advertising, design, marketing, and journalism, I bring a full-spectrum perspective to visual communications. What drives my approach isn't just technical skill — it's the belief that great imagery starts with people feeling seen. I create environments where subjects feel respected, at ease, and genuinely themselves. That same collaborative spirit carries through every project, from concept to final edit

Both of my parents were public school educators. My career began with them telling me one summer to get off my skateboard, get out of my comfort zone and learn photography from our neighbor, Sam Hughes, a teacher and also small business owner of the island’s first film developing service and portrait photography studio. I attended Florida A&M University and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism that included studying photography. That time included using my first camera, a 1980 Miranda MS-1. Given to me by my parents, that camera sits on my desk as a reminder of the humble start of my career. Five years into working professionally, I returned home and shared a portfolio of work with Mr. Hughes. During that 2005 visit, he told me, “Marcus, usually when people bring me these types of things, it's not worth my time. You've exceeded everything I've tried to do in my lifetime. Go find people and companies that value what you do.”

I bring a high-level command of digital capture, strobe and ambient lighting, and post-production — equally at home behind the camera as in front of a screen. I stay curious, draw inspiration broadly, and solve problems with creativity as my first tool. As a Certified Professional Photographer and proud member of the Professional Photographers of America, I hold myself to high standards — but the quality I'm most proud of is simpler: people trust me in the room
